Australopithecus afarensis was the first hominid to be a biped. This in effect allowed later hominids such as Homo habilis to emerge as a the first toolmaking hominid. Homo erectus with the discovery and control of fire paved the way allowing migration, protection, and the seeds of culture to take place. Homo neanderthalensis with its larger brain created more sophisticated tools and prototype communities. Lastly, Homo sapien, the only surviving human species created art, language, and culture through the special ability of thinking abstractly. Click on the link below called "Early Humans."
